MIA Update - May 31, 2022

MIA Update:The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced two burial updates and three new identifications for service members who have been missing and unaccounted-for from World War II and Korea. Returning home for burial with full military honors are:

-- Navy Fire Controlman 3rd Class Jack A. Breedlove, 19, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft on Dec. 7, 1941. The USS Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to quickly capsize. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including Breedlove. He will be buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) in Honolulu, on May 31, 2022. -- Army Air Forces 1st Lt. Louis V. Girard, 20, of West, Texas, was assigned to 68th Bombardment Squadron, 44th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. On Aug. 1, 1943, the B-24 Liberator aircraft on which Girard was piloting crashed as a result of anti-aircraft fire during Operation Tidal Wave. Following the war, his remains could not be identified. He will be buried in his hometown on June 4, 2022. -- Army Air Forces Staff Sgt. Michael Uhrin, 21, was assigned to 369th Bombardment Squadron, 306th Bombardment Group, 40th Combat Wing, 8th Air Force. On Oct. 14, 1943, the B-17F Flying Fortress bomber on which Uhrin was serving as a radio operator was shot down by enemy fighters. The surviving crew reported he was killed before the plane crashed. Following the war, his remains could not be identified. Interment services are pending. -- Navy Seaman 1st Class William Brooks, 19, was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft on Dec. 7, 1941. -- Army Sgt. 1st Class James a Coleman, 22, was assigned to Company I, 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. On April 25, 1951, he was reported as missing in action while fighting against Chinese Communist Forces near the Hwachon Reservoir in modern-day Republic of Korea. His status was changed to killed in action on Oct. 3, 1952. Following the war, his remains could not be identified. Interment services are pending.
