REMINDER…FUND RAISER FOR BRANDON WALDEN…SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE NEVADA CITY ELKS CLUB…RESERVATIONS NEED TO BE MADE NO LATER THAN FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 14 AT 5pm. Details below.

Fred

Hello, everyone!

I am very pleased to tell you that the Nevada City Elks Club is generously holding a benefit spaghetti dinner for Army Specialist Brandon Walden and his family. Brandon is the local PV hero who was shot up in a street attack in Afghanistan in July. This is a critical fundraiser for Brandon's family! The family needs as much community support as we can possibly provide! The dinner is 5:30-8:30pm, Sat, Sept 15, by reservation only, Phone: 530.265.4920 (Call for reservations by 5pm, Fri, Sept 14). Please see other details below.

As many of you know, Brandon and several members of his squad were gunned down in the street in a surprise attack by a terrorist disguised as an Afghan soldier. Brandon was seriously wounded, taking three bullets! Since the July attack, he has had five surgeries and is awaiting word from his doctors on whether he will need a sixth surgery. He has lost forty pounds and is fighting an infection. He will be in re-hab for up to a year.

Brandon is recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft Sam Houston, TX. His mother, Laura Cummins, and his fiancee have been at his side since July. Laura has been away from her job as a social worker for nearly two months. Though Brandon is under Army medical supervision, Laura has become his principal caregiver and advocate, 24/7.

Laura is a single mom and has five other children living at home. Two adult moms are helping, one staying with the children full time. With Laura not working, funds are seriously short. A six-week-long food drive has provided the family with enough non-perishable food to last through the end of the year. Efforts are under way to obtain fresh food and dairy products on a continuing basis. The recent spaghetti dinner put on by PV Lions volunteers at the Tack Room and the Wells Fargo donation fund have helped, but more support is needed.

I am asking as many of you as possible to support Brandon and his family at this very difficult time. The Elks spaghetti dinner will be a wonderful event. They have an excellent club facility and a full service bar with more than reasonable prices.

The dinner includes garden salad, spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread, and dessert. The cost is only $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children. Chaplain Dennis Fruzza of the local American Legion chapter is the family's liaison. He and his wife will escort and sit with Brandon's brothers and sisters at the family table and deliver an opening prayer and the latest update on Brandon's condition.

Please do your best to attend this important fundraiser for Brandon's family! Put together a group of friends, if you can! It is important you call for reservations by no later than 5pm, Fri, Sept 14.
