USDVA Extends In-State Tuition Compliance Deadline for California Colleges

Sacramento – On May 15, 2015, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA) granted states a waiver to Section 702 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014 (“the Choice Act”) which included a provision affecting California Veterans using the Post 9/11 GI Bill® and Montgomery GI Bill at public institutions. The Choice Act requires public institutions to charge resident in-state tuition and fees to covered individuals, beginning July 1, 2015. The waiver announced by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (USDVA) extends the effective date to December 31, 2015, to allow every state and territory the opportunity to comply with the law.

“The action by USDVA ensures students using GI Bill benefits in California are able to continue training at their chosen institutions, as California public institutions work to comply with the Choice Act requirements,” said Keith Boylan, CalVet’s Deputy Secretary for Veterans Services. “CalVet thanks USDVA for taking the initiative for our Veterans and dependents using the GI Bill.”

USDVA’s policy impacts Veterans and dependents who enroll in an institution within three years of the Veteran’s qualifying discharge. CalVet is working with representatives in the public education system, so that all California state colleges and universities can continue to serve our Veterans.
