CalVet, Foodlink Join to Give Thanksgiving Turkeys to Families in Need

Employees at the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) will donate more than 40 turkeys to California Emergency Foodlink. Foodlink will then give the turkeys to families who could not otherwise manage a Thanksgiving dinner. Funds for the turkeys were raised by CalVet volunteers who accepted donations for the chance to win gift baskets and sold baked goods and international soups prepared by staff and served to employees in the building.

“This is the second year CalVet has donated turkeys to Foodlink,” said CalVet Secretary Peter J. Gravett. “Last year it was just 12, this year it will be more than 40! I’m so proud of our staff’s generosity and hard work on behalf of families who are struggling to make ends meet during these difficult economic times.”

On Thursday, November 15, 2012, from 6 a.m. – 9 a.m., a refrigerated Foodlink truck will be parked in the alley behind the California Department of Food and Agriculture building at 1220 N Street, Sacramento, to accept turkey donations. Foodlink will record the weight and number of turkeys donated by individuals and departments so everyone can receive appropriate recognition for their generosity.

Founded in 1992, Foodlink is Sacramento County’s Official Food Bank. At no charge to recipient agencies, Foodlink delivers more than 120 million pounds of food per year throughout California. Foodlink delivers government commodities from The Emergency Food Assistance Program as well as fresh produce collected under the statewide agricultural food rescue program, Donate-Don’t Dump.
