On Valentines' Day, Remember VA Patients
Secretary Nicholson Encourages Visits, Volunteers and Valentines

WASHINGTON (February 9, 2007) - As Valentines' Day approaches, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson is encouraging civic groups, youth organizations, schools and average Americans to make the patients in VA hospitals part of their Valentines Day festivities.

"I encourage Americans from all walks of life to deliver valentines to their local VA medical centers and to visit the veterans there," Nicholson said. "We should realize the importance of a personal touch, a heart-felt Thank You and small acts of compassion in the lives of our patients."

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) operates the nation's largest integrated health care system, with 155 hospitals, more than 130 nursing homes and 45 domiciliaries.

"Each card and visitor is a message of caring for our hospitalized veterans," Nicholson added. "It's also a sign of respect for their contributions to our country.

"What really brightens a hospitalized veteran's day is a visit from someone who wants to spend a few minutes to personally thank them for their military service."

Nicholson also encouraged people to become regular volunteers at VA medical facilities. The volunteers enable the professional staff to concentrate on health care of VA patients.
