Vietnam Memorial Name Committee Meeting Scheduled

EVENT: In accordance with Assembly Bill 287 (Chapter 299 Statutes of 2013) the first organizational meeting of the committee tasked with determining which names of veterans should be added to the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial is being announced.

DATE: Tuesday, July 22, 2014

TIME: 10:00 a. m.

PLACE: Medal of Honor Hall California Department of Veterans Affairs 1227 O Street Sacramento, CA 95814

MEMBERS: CalVet Secretary Peter J. Gravett chairman of the committee, representing the California State Commanders Veterans Council, Jerry Guevara, Jim Anderson, and Frederick Romero; representing Vietnam Veterans of American, Mike Kennedy, Al Sickle and Lou Nunes (alternate) ; and Assembly member Jim Frazier ex-officio member.

BACKGROUND: The legislature passed AB 287 in 2013 that required the department to compile a list of names of Vietnam veterans to be added to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The list shall be compiled annually by November 1 beginning in 2014. The department was also required under the provisions of the bill to establish a committee by July 1, 2014, chaired by the Secretary or his or her designees consisting of three representatives from the California State Commanders Veterans Council and two representatives from the Vietnam Veterans of American, California State Council. The committee is tasked with reviewing and considering requests to include names on the memorial pursuant to requirements outlined in the bill. The names that are compiled may be added to the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial, if adequate private funding is available and there is sufficient space on the memorial to accommodate the names.
